Fiber - Optic Sensing of Linear Thermal Expansion (RESEARCH NOTES)
The use of a LED fiber-optic sensor to measure displacement and linear thermal expansion is described. It has a sensitivity of about 0.6 mV/mm, a resolution of 1.25 mm, and a dynamic rang of 400 mm for displacement measurements. For thermal expansion, it shows a sensitivity of about 3.5 mV/C, and the experimental linear expansion values are in agreement with those calculated. The reported senso...
متن کاملResearch on Fiber-grating-based Wireless Sensor Networks
A 20-node fiber-grating-based wireless sensor network is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Each sensor node is integrated with the light source, 1–3 FBG sensing probes, wavelength demodulation, and wireless communication module. Via self-organized clusters and low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) route protocols, the sensor nodes are able to exchange sensing data with the co...
متن کاملFiber Bragg Grating-Based Vibration Sensing for Machine Prognostics
We report results from a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based scheme for vibration sensing in combustion engines. The vibration sensing is carried out using a commercial high speed spectrometer. We compare the performance of the FBG sensor with commercial PZT-based sensors and find that the FBGs perform as well.
متن کاملOptimization of Apodized Fiber Bragg Grating for Sensing Applications
This paper presents the modeling and characterization of an Apodized optical fiber Bragg grating for maximum reflectivity and minimum side lobe power wastage and narrow spectral response. The modeling is based upon coupled mode theory together with transfer matrix method. This matrix approach is effective at treating a single grating as a series of separate
متن کاملDistributed three-dimensional fiber Bragg grating refractometer for biochemical sensing.
We demonstrate a three-dimensional (3-D) distributed refractometer that measures refractive index in a small volume. The sensor is based on an evanescent-wave fiber Bragg grating that is interrogated by low-coherence spectral interferometry. The measurement can be performed on a short time scale without the need for a mechanical scan. The new sensor was used to simultaneously measure glucose co...
